Bocadillos opened in 2004 when Chef Gerald Hirigoyen and his wife Cameron jumped at the opportunity to reinterpret the tapas tradition inside the legendary Canessa Printing Building, an iconic San Francisco storefront that was once home to the original Black Cat Club in the 1930’s. The restaurant pays tribute to Hirigoyen’s native Basque cuisine and contemporary Californian cooking, something that he describes as “San Sebastian meets Barcelona in San Francisco.”
Gerald Hirigoyen is also the chef/owner of Piperade, his renowned “West Coast Basque” restaurant just off the Embarcadero, and has long been lauded by critics and customers alike. Food & Wine Magazine selected Hirigoyen as one of the Ten Best New Chefs in America in 1994 and San Francisco Focus Magazine tapped him as their 1995 Chef of the Year. In 1996 Gourmet Magazine selected Fringale as one of the top ten restaurants in Northern California along with presenting Hirigoyen with their annual "Evian Healthy Menu Award." In the same year, Esquire Magazine selected Pastis as one of the "Best New Restaurants of the Year." In 2007 he was a James Beard nominee for “Best Chef: California”.
In addition to his accomplishments as a restaurateur, Hirigoyen has authored two cookbook books together with his wife, including Bistro (Sunset Books) in 1995 and The Basque Kitchen (Harper-Collins) in 1999. The latter topped the Bay Area cookbook best-seller list and won the internationally recognized Versailles Award for Best Regional Cookbook. In 2009, Hirigoyen published Pintxos: Small Plates in the Basque Tradition (Ten Speed Press) co-authored by Lisa Weiss. Since 2003, he has co-owned a vineyard called Arrels (with partners including Emmanuel Kemiji) in the Priorat region of Catalunya, Spain, which enabled them to subsequently open Clos Pissarra Winery.
Bocadillos is located at 710 Montgomery Street, near Washington Street, in the heart of San Francisco's lively Jackson Square neighborhood. The restaurant is open Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and on Saturday 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Limited advance reservations are newly available via SeatMe.com and walk-in guests are always welcome.
